The importance of having a business use only computer

Previously I have mentioned the importance of keeping your personal and business related items separate, including computers. Why is it important to have a separate computer for business? Simple:

1. Avoid distractions. Increase efficiency.- By having a business only computer, you have a greater chance to avoid checking personal browser favorite websites...etc.

2. Avoid security vulnerabilities.- Typically we like to have fun with our personal computers, we like to try out different software(s), we check personal emails with attachments from friends and family members. All these allow a greater chance for bugs to sneak into your personal computer. By having a business only computer, avoiding these personal tasks can reduce security vulnerabilities on the business computer.

Now let's talk about the requirements of the business only computer, basically you will be looking at the main categories below:

Desktop or Laptop?- Are you going to be staying at home all the time or do you need to go out for meetings or to meet with clients? Typically laptop is preferred for business users since it gives you the portability and mobility to be able to work on the road.

What kind of laptop?- It really depends on the type of work you do. If you travel a lot and you don't do much graphic/video editing, Light-weight laptops with high battery life are ideal. If you do graphic/video editing, you'll be looking at laptops that are typically more in weight and size, but with dedicated graphic cards for the performance you need.

Backup files regularly.- Backing up your files daily, weekly, or monthly is very important for your business. For example, what if you lose your laptop with all the clients' information on it? Also, it is very important to store the backups in a safe locationandaway from your office. For example, you don't want an unexpected fire to destroy both your home office computer and your backups with your clients' information.

Secure the computer and the backups. - To avoid your confidential, business information leaking out, you must password protect your business computer. Set BIOS, Hard Drive, Operating System, and individual files passwords.
