Search Engine Statistics - April 2009

According to the latest search engine statistics, Google still shows its dominance of the search engine market by holding approximately 64.2% of the market. Google's search engine usage has grown by 16.7% over the past year.

Yahoo and Microsoft may be planning a merge. With Yahoo's current search engine market share of 10.3%, and Microsoft's market share of 15.7%, together that would hold approximately 26% of the search market. With all of their web applications combined together (Yahoo Mail, Hot Mail, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, IE...etc.), their potential of growth would be interesting to see. That is, if they do actually merge.

The rest of the search market is being shared by other smaller search engines. AOL is probably the biggest among them. With its search market growth of 6.6% after last year, we know that they are getting very serious about their search. Recently AOL recruited Google's Senior VP of Advertising, Tim Armstrong, to be their new CEO. AOL's potential is not to be overlooked.

From these statistics, we can conclude that:

It is essential to make your website Google-friendly.
